American black cherry has a unique and characteristic appearance of rich red and medium brown tones with the sapwood tending towards pale yellow (outer portion of the trunk). However, once freshly sawn the heartwood (inner portion of the trunk) is often a light pinkish brown which quickly darkens once exposed to light.

The texture is fine and even with a subtle natural lustre while the grain is often straight but with some instances of figuring. This species is graded as being resistant to decay and very durable.

American black cherry is renowned for its workability and general characteristics that make it an all-round high quality timber. This is because of its stability, good performance during machining, good response to gluing, and excellent finishes when polished. One drawback is that when stained the wood can sometimes take on a blotchy appearance, this effect can be reduced if a sanding sealer is applied prior to staining or a gel-based stain can often minimise this issue.

American black cherry can be used in environments such as furniture making, cabinetry, turning, carving, high quality joinery, boat interiors, and interior panelling. This timber is multipurpose because of its low stiffness and good bending properties.
